Atari is an iconic company in the world of video games. Founded in 1972 in the United States by Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney, this legendary company revolutionised home entertainment in the mid-1970s to 80s by popularising arcade cabinets and home consoles.
Its main titles include: "Pong" (1972), the first commercially successful video game, simulating a game of table tennis; "Asteroids" (1979), a classic arcade game where players destroy asteroids in space; "Centipede" (1981), a cult shoot'em up featuring a centipede descending the screen.
Although the company has faced financial difficulties and several buyouts, Atari remains the symbol of the golden age of video games, and continues to draw on its nostalgic heritage through various ports of its cult titles on new platforms.
