Marathon is a multiplayer extraction shooter developed by Bungie, revisiting the classic sci-fi universe of the original series from the 90s. In this game, players take on the role of 'Runners', cybernetically augmented mercenaries, sent to the planet Tau Ceti IV in search of glory, wealth and survival. The main objective is to extract valuable resources while facing other players and environmental threats in a persistent and dangerous world.

The gameplay focuses on intense extraction sessions, where Runners must infiltrate hostile zones, collect rare loot, eliminate rivals and extract alive to keep their gains. Bungie emphasizes fluid mechanics inspired by its hits like Halo and Destiny, with fast movement, varied weapons and unique special abilities for each Runner. Recently revealed features include advanced customization systems, dynamic open-world events and a player-driven economy.

The Marathon universe is a blend of retro-futuristic space opera and corporate thriller, where megacorporations control interstellar resources. The 'Server Slam', a closed beta test phase, allowed players to test over 30 hours of content, revealing a title more polished than expected with precise gunplay and immersive maps. Despite internal challenges at Bungie, the game promises a deep competitive experience with PvP and PvE modes.

Scheduled for release in March 2026 at €40, Marathon aims to redefine the extraction shooter genre by drawing on Bungie's expertise in live service.
