Derived from the Mario universe, the Yoshi franchise has gradually built its own identity, worlds away from the bustle of conventional platformers. The Yoshi series, which first appeared in the early '90s through an initial appearance in Super Mario World and then Yoshi's Island on the Super Nintendo, features a green dinosaur in contemplative adventures, guided by meticulous level design and a strongly defined art direction.

Across generations of Nintendo consoles, the series has flirted with different registers of 2D/2.5D platforming, notably playing on exploration, collecting, and an accessible challenge. The new installment Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, developed by Good-Feel for Nintendo Switch 2, extends this direction with a world-book and creatures to study and name interactively.
