Silent Hill is a true survival horror institution, first appearing under Konami in 1999. The player must make their way through a foggy, nightmarish town where reality and the psyche intertwine. Unlike some action-horror games, Silent Hill relies on psychological dread, an oppressive atmosphere, and symbolism. Each new installment drags its cast of characters into deep inner trauma, revealing their hidden neuroses through grotesque creatures and unsettling environments. The series is not short on standout installments (Silent Hill 2 remains THE reference, especially since its 2024 remake), media (including films among them), and influence on its genre.
