The Metro saga takes players into a post-apocalyptic atmosphere inspired by Dmitry Glukhovsky's novels. Launched in 2010 with Metro 2033, developed by 4A Games, it follows Artyom, a young man surviving in the Moscow metro after it was devastated by a nuclear war in 2013. The survivors sheltering there fight in dark tunnels against mutants, radiation, and rival factions in an FPS that blends survival, horror, and immersive storytelling.
Metro Last Light (2013) heightens this oppressive atmosphere by injecting moral choices that impact the story, and Metro Exodus (2019) breathes fresh air into the whole and opens up the world to a continental Russia. With more than 10 million copies sold, the Metro saga has refreshed the survival horror shooter genre with its approach to draconian ammo management, complete with a gas mask and a flashlight.
With Metro 2039 announced in 2026, the turning point is here: six years after Exodus, we get another protagonist, the Stranger, confronting the fascist Novoreich regime led by Hunter, a fanatical Spartan.
