Langrisser

Langrisser is a Japanese tactical RPG franchise born in 1991 at Masaya Games, created by Michi Miyagawa and illustrated by Satoshi Urushihara, whose distinctive character design - warrior women in revealing outfits - marked an entire generation. The first episode, released on Mega Drive under the title Warsong in the West, already laid the foundations: grid-based battles, troops of foot soldiers commanded by heroes, and management of tactical advantage by class (cavalry, lancers, archers).

The saga developed mainly between 1991 and 1998, with five canonical numbered episodes. Langrisser II (1994) is often cited as the peak of the series, with its multiple camps system and narrative branches. Langrisser III introduces an open world map, while Der Langrisser - an enhanced version of II - pushes multiple paths to the extreme. The franchise went through a long hibernation after the Saturn/PlayStation years, before a comeback under Extreme and NCS Corp.

In 2019, the remaster Langrisser I & II (PC, PS4, Switch) brought the saga back into the spotlight, followed by a mobile gacha, Langrisser Mobile, developed by BlackJack Studio - the studio behind this new episode. An essential reference of the genre alongside Fire Emblem and Shining Force, Langrisser has durably influenced Japanese tactical RPGs through its systemic depth and its sense of large-scale epic conflict.
