Launched in 1997 on the original PlayStation, Gran Turismo became the spearhead of racing simulation on console. A cornerstone of designer Kazunori Yamauchi's vision and Polyphony Digital studio, it stood out from the start with a physics engine ahead of its time and an almost obsessive focus on realism, embodied by a legendary tagline: « The Real Driving Simulator ».
Installment after installment, from Gran Turismo and GT2 on PS1 to GT3 and GT4 on PS2, the series filled its garage with hundreds of licensed vehicles, faithfully recreated tracks, and a career mode that transformed the player's journey into a genuine amateur driver's calling. On PS3 and PS4, Gran Turismo 5, 6 then Sport pushed online play and the organization of eSports events even further, even forming a partnership with the FIA for official championships.
With Gran Turismo 7 on PS5 and PS4, the franchise nonetheless returns to a more classic formula in terms of content, while integrating contemporary features, from variable weather to regular updates expanding the number of available cars and tracks.
