Fatal Fury is one of the pioneers of Japanese versus fighting, born in 1991 on Neo Geo and directed by Takashi Nishiyama, already behind Street Fighter. From its first appearance with Fatal Fury: King of Fighters, the South Town setting is established, with the duel between Terry Bogard and the unfortunate Geese Howard. Quickly, Fatal Fury 2 and Special refined the gameplay system, a finesse carried by the multiple-plane mechanic and a cast that would become iconic, from Mai Shiranui to Kim Kaphwan.
At the end of the 90s, the series becomes more cinematic, with the Real Bout trilogy that pushes further the ring-outs, destructible scenery and above all the drama surrounding South Town. The universe expands in parallel with animated films, feeding a major spin-off, with The King of Fighters which brings back many characters, contributing to the establishment of SNK as a pillar of the fighting game.
This franchise, after a long absence, returns to the forefront with Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, a 3D installment that modernizes the systems while relying on the saga's historic figures.
