Launched in 1992 on Mega Drive by Ed Annunziata, it puts the player in the shoes of a fearless dolphin navigating a mysterious ocean, blending underwater exploration, complex puzzles, and battles against hostile creatures. The first installment, followed by Ecco: The Tides of Time in 1994, stood out for its captivating soundtrack and unforgiving difficulty, and became a legend among 16-bit fans.

Also ported to Master System, Game Gear and Mega-CD, the saga reached several generations through compilations such as Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection or the Nintendo Switch Online service. Today, in 2026, Ecco resurfaces with Ecco the Dolphin: Complete, a remastered compilation of the 8 and 16-bit versions of the first two games, enriched with a brand-new adventure created by A&R Atelier, Annunziata's studio.
