The Donkey Kong series, created by Nintendo in 1981, initially appeared as an arcade game where Mario must rescue Pauline from Donkey Kong's clutches. It later evolved to put the gorilla in the spotlight (as evidenced by the Donkey Kong Country platform game series in the '90s, which renewed the genre with its pre-rendered graphics). It features varied settings (platforming, racing in Diddy Kong Racing, rhythm in Donkey Konga, fighting in Super Smash Bros) and endearing characters, such as Diddy Kong or Dixie Kong. The series happily weaves its way through Nintendo's catalog.
