Blue Lock
Blue Lock is a Japanese manga created by Muneyuki Kaneshiro for the story and Yusuke Nomura for the artwork, published since August 2018 in Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Champion magazine. The starting premise breaks radically with the usual codes of sports manga: after Japan's early elimination from the World Cup, the Japanese federation locks three hundred promising strikers in an isolated training center, dubbed the Blue Lock, with a single goal - to forge the ultimate egoist capable of making the country win.
The manga established itself as a phenomenon within a few years, carried by striking characters such as Yoichi Isagi, the protagonist in search of his playing identity, or immediately charismatic rivals such as Meguru Bachira, Seishiro Nagi and Rin Itoshi. The anime adaptation, launched in October 2022 by studio 8bit, multiplied the audience internationally and propelled the franchise beyond the usual circle of sports manga fans.
An animated film, Blue Lock: Episode Nagi, enriched the universe in 2024, while a second television season continued the story. Blue Lock redefined sports manga by focusing on individual psychology and the obsession with performance rather than traditional team spirit, winning over an audience well beyond football fans. The license continues its expansion today through derivative products, collaborations and now video game crossovers (REMATCH).
