Owlcat Games was created in 2016 in Moscow by video game veterans such as Oleg Shpilchevskiy and Alexander Mishulin, who have several notable productions to their credit: Heroes of Might and Magic V, Silent Storm or Allods Online. The studio very quickly refocused on solo cRPGs after years spent on MMORPGs.

Now based in Cyprus with an office in Armenia and more than 450 employees around the world, the studio made a name for itself with Pathfinder: Kingmaker (2018), followed by Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous (2021) then Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader (2023). Owlcat Games is currently working on The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, a tactical RPG from a third-person perspective set in the series' universe, with a beta in April 2026. Owlcat has also moved into publishing to help other genre enthusiasts.
