Born within Ubisoft Montpellier in 1995, the Rayman franchise very quickly became the flagship of the French publisher. The first episode, a friendly and colorful 2D platformer, would prove to be Ubisoft's first major commercial success, and immediately established its armless, legless hero as an easily identifiable mascot.

The series then moved into 3D with Rayman 2: The Great Escape, often cited as the best platformer of its era for its inventive level design and its atmosphere that was both dreamlike and slightly dark. Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc extended the register into a somewhat more cartoonish and sarcastic vein, while the Rabbids spin-offs shifted the universe into a slapstick humor style that appealed to a wide audience.

It was ultimately with Rayman Origins and then Rayman Legends, two 2D HD episodes combining hand-drawn animations, a wacky soundtrack, and perfectly polished local co-op, that the true return to its roots took place.
