Pikuniku is an independent video game franchise carried by publisher Devolver Digital and development collective Sectordub, built around an absurd and minimalist universe. In the first episode released in 2019 on PC and Nintendo Switch, players explore a 2D world with flat, colorful terrain, inhabited by creatures that are sometimes naive, sometimes unsettling, through levels combining exploration, platforming and small puzzles. You play as a red, slender oval-shaped fellow, catapulted against his will into a society that appears benevolent on the surface, but undermined by the capitalism of a billionaire philanthropist who's a bit too shameless.
Beneath its childlike appearance, this series stands out for its very British humor, a form of absurdity in the dialogue, but also social criticism, earning it a cult following that took hold in the indie scene upon release. The announcement of Pikuniku 2, planned for PC and Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027, confirms the intention to turn it into a real saga.
